Institute for Animal Breeding

sheep
The Institute for Animal Breeding aims to improve genetic progress of farm animals through research and the development of applied selection tools. The different work groups deal with performance testing, estimation of breeding values, molecular genetics, biotechnology, genetic resources and the design of breeding programs. Developments in the genetic diversity of Bavarian breeding populations are documented by systematic monitoring of genetic trends and hereditary diseases.

Tasks and Topics:

  • Estimation of breeding values and development of new genetic/genomic methods
  • linear scoring of daughters of Bavarian AI-sires
  • Conception and monitoring of breeding program for polled Simmental cattle
  • Applied research in the fields of biotechnology and molecular genetics
  • Experiments for cattle fattening and carcass quality
  • Representation of Bavarian cattle breeding at national and international levels

Institute for Animal Nutrition and Feed Management

cows
The main goal of animal nutrition and feed management is to ensure an adequate supply of livestock with energy, nutrients, minerals and essential micronutrients, thus facilitating the health, well-being and productivity of animals. This is the basis for high quality and safety of the food.

Tasks and Topics:

  • Evaluation of feed quality, feed preservation and silage additives
  • Feeding and digestibility trials, research on use of grassland with animals
  • Developing professional principles, feeding concepts and their implementation in ration planning systems
  • Training and further training of farmers and consulting staff, providing consulting documentation
  • Monitoring of feeds with regard to valuable and undesired substances

Institute for Agricultural Engineering and Animal Husbandry

field
The Institute investigates, develops, tests and evaluates new process technologies for plant and animal production as well as for environmental engineering in the fields of biogas technology and emissions/immissions. The goal is to bring in line the different requirements of animal welfare and environment protection, economy and work management.

Tasks and Topics:

  • Promising husbandry systems, particularly for cattle, pigs and horses
  • Modern process technologies for crop farming (arable farming, grassland, speciality crops etc.)
  • Efficient processes for biogas production
  • Knowledge transfer and supervision of the info exhibition “Cattle and Pigs”
  • Compiling of consultancy documents as well as developing and constructing experimental equipment and facilities
